Step 1   ABSENCE FROM WORK

•  Immediately employee unable to attend work, and reason given is back pain, employer logs absence with backProActive.

•  We assign a care manager to the employee.

TIMESCALE: 1 day

 

Step 2   SUPPORT PROGRAMME

•  The employee receives our Support Pack, which provides information and advice on understanding and dealing with back pain.

•  The Support Pack should help the employee to manage the problem and return to working activity.

•  absence resolved at earliest stage possible and at least cost

TIMESCALE: 2 - 4 days

 

Step 3   CONTINUED ABSENCE INTERVIEW

•  Should the employee not return to work, the backProActive care manager will contact the employee and conduct a brief review to ascertain if further assistance may be beneficial to help resolve the continuing absence.

•  The care manager will use our standard questionnaire designed to help highlight continuing problems.

•  If the employee indicates that they cannot return to work still, the option of a full assessment with an independent chartered physiotherapist will be discussed.

•  The care manager reports the outcome of the review to the employer.

TIMESCALE: 4 - 5 days

 

Step 4   PROLONGED ABSENCE (greater than 5 days)

•  If prolonged absence is a risk, and if agreed by the employer, backProActive will offer the employee a full and detailed assessment with an independent chartered physiotherapist.

•  The back to work review findings will be recorded in an easy-to-follow summary which may be made available to the employer and the employee's GP (subject to employee's pre-agreed consent).

•  absence resolved at earliest stage possible and at least cost

TIMESCALE: 4 - 7 days absence

 

Step 5   PHYSIOTHERAPY TREATMENT

•  Following the assessment, backProActive will contact the employer to ascertain if employee has returned to work.

•  If employee is still absent due to back pain backProActive will establish whether the employer will fund a limited course of physiotherapy treatment (if NHS treatment is not available at this stage)

•  If approved, a short course of physiotherapy treatment (to pre-agreed funding level) to restore function and encourage early return to activity and work.

•  Upon conclusion of the treatment the findings will be recorded in an easy-to-follow summary which may be made available to the employer and the employee's GP (subject to employee's pre-agreed consent)

•  absence resolved at earliest stage possible and at least cost

TIMESCALE: 1 - 3 weeks
