Problem Identified

Mr. S, a service engineer had been suffering with low back pain for over a year which had resulted in frequent absences from work. His work involved manual handling and lifting. His employers felt that the problem was genuine but were frustrated that they had little control over the absences that were causing considerable disruption and cost to the company. In all other respects Mr. S. was a productive and valued employee.

Action Taken

XYZ Ltd referred Mr. S. for assessment/advice and it was recommended that, on this occasion, the employee might benefit from a short course of physiotherapy. The aim of the physiotherapy was to provide the employee with the confidence and knowledge to take control of the back pain problem and to build strength and stamina in his back. This would also help prevent future recurrences of the problem.

The Solution

Treatment resulted in Mr. S's low back pain being dramatically reduced to only minimal symptoms. He returned to full duties with care during heavy lifting. Mr. S. received tailored and particular advice on how he could best cope with heavy or awkward lifting. A home exercise programme was provided and Mr. S. motivated and encouraged to continue with it.

Cost Benefit Analysis

The cost to the employer was only £323.00 .

The estimated saving to Mr. S's employer was in excess of £2000.00 .

Net financial gain to employer £1677.00

The employer was also pleased to have returned an important member staff to work, to have avoided further work disruption. The considerable financial savings were a bonus. The employee was grateful for the concern and care shown by his employer.
